The scientific name of this delicious berry is Vaccinium. There are many types of this deciduous perennial, such as Vaccinium Alaskaense (Alaskan blueberry), and Vaccinuim Formosum (Southern blueberry). Harvest times in the U.S. vary usually from May to August.
Blueberries are used in many dishes like muffins, pie, cobbler, and jam, or just by the handful. The latter is expensive, however, as blueberries cost around $6 per quart. The prices vary depending on growing size and where they were grown.
Centennial park in Plymouth Indiana hosts the annual Marshall county Blueberry Festival in August and September, with free admission.
